The original Unix source code is owned by SCO; the Unix trademark is owned by The Open Group; and the leading Unix-like systems are GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Solaris. The commands and options that ship with these versions overlap, but there are lots of differences. Confused? Don t type rm -rf just yet. Unix in a Nutshell, Fourth Edition, defines what Unix means in a world where there is no standard-bearer. It distills what s common to the leading Unix-like operating systems, so you can easily find the commands that work everywhere. And it shows you the most important system-specific commands and options, so you can work proficiently on your favorite Unix variant. The book also covers many important open source tools that have de facto become part of Unix, even though they may not ship with the operating system. These tools include CVS, Subversion, GNU Make, and GDB, plus smaller utilités such as curl and wget. In addition, there are thorough discussions of the shells that are in common use (bash, ksh, and tcsh); essentials such as regular expressions; and old favorites such as sed, awk, and vi. If you are dazzled or dismayed by the diversity of Unix systems, or if you work with one or many of them on a frequent basis, you ll be using this book daily. Unix isn t a big, monolithic thing: it s a synthesis. And Unix in a Nutshell is the book that puts it all together.
