Sight Фоетѕ and Qommentary 295 STATISTICAL APPENDIX ABBREVIATIONS 325 NOTES 329 INDEX 399 FOR LOVERS OF the often troubling poetry of Louis MacNeice, his father is a reassuring presence: solid, sober, pious yet tolerant, a Church of Ireland clergyman unafraid to reject the Ulster Covenant of 1912, denounce sectarianism, and even espouse Irish nationalism. Rejecting his father s puritanism, Louis MacNeice is pictured as inheriting his liberalism and strong sense of Irishness. This book originated in the discovery of one inconvenient fact. Frederick MacNeice (1866-1942) was not a Home Ruler but an all-Ireland Unionist, who for many years was an enthusiastic Orangeman in Dublin and then Ulster. In later life, especially as Bishop of Down after 1934, he set aside these connections to pursue intercommunal peace and tolerance in Belfast and beyond. Louis colluded with his father in reinterpreting his earlier career, as part of a process of personal reconciliation that profoundly affected his later poetry and autobiographical writings. The relationship between father and son is re- examined, and several well-known poems are reinterpreted in the light of fresh evidence. Solitary and Wild tells the story of a visionary who never despaired of spreading salvation through the often derided Church of Ireland. As a child on Omey Island in Connemara, he had witnessed his own parents involvement in a remarkable campaign of souperism , leading to the family s ejection from the island in 1879. He too was trained as a teacher for the notorious Irish Church Missions to the Roman Catholics before entering Trinity College, Dublin, in 1892, which broadened his outlook without extinguishing his missionary spirit. Though never at ease with Catholic doctrine or clerical politics, his main mission in Ulster was to evangelize the multitude of working-class nominal Protestants. As an Orange chaplain, he gained access to humble Protestants of all denominations, whom he guided towards sobriety, non-violence, and obedience to continued on back flap continued from front flap the civil power in a period of upheaval. His career shows that Orangeism was perfectly compatible with decency, tolerance, and pride in Irishness. Using unfamiliar archives and local newspapers as well as the writings of both father and son, Solitary and Wild1 reconstructs the disparate worlds in which Frederick MacNeice lived and worked. It also explores his muted responses to the suffering of his parents and siblings, the early death of his deeply depressed first wife, and the benefits resulting from his second marriage. The figure that emerges is complex, guarded, astute, and remarkably effective in deploying religion to spread enlightenment. The biography reassesses the lifelong achievement of a unique yet influential figure in Protestant Ireland, whose personality and views helped to shape the work of a great Irish poet. David FiTZPATRiCKÍs Professor of Modem History at Trinity College, Dublin. His works include Politics and Irish Life, iç/j-içsi: Provincial Experience of War and Revolution (1977); Oceans of Consolation: Personal Accounts of Irish Migration to Australia (1995); The Two Irelands, IÇ12-JÇJÇ (1998); and Harry Boland s Irish Revolution (2003). His edited collection of essays by members of the Trinity History Workshop, Terror in Ireland, 1916-1923, will be published by The Lilliput Press in 2012. Jacket design by Null McCormack.
