SUMMARY
This book, entitled Buying books... A History of the Book
Marketin
the Czech Lands, is concerned with the socio-cul-
tural history of the book market. The concept of Czech
Lands , from the subtitle, shows that rny point of depar¬
ture is based on a territorial rather than language princi¬
ple. Following this point of view, what the book takes into
consideration is not only publishing and acquiring Czech
books, but also books written in German, Latin, Hebrew,
and Slovak (in modern times), to a certain extent also
books written in Hungarian,
Ruthenian,
and Polish. The
book maps the history from the Middle Ages to our cur¬
rent times
(2014)
and is organized within eight chapters.
Each of them deals with a specific period having its own
historical background and, as a result of this, different
heuristic sources. Generally speaking, the more distant
the period is, the less autonomously one can follow the
social life of books. Given this fact, the first and partly also
the second chapter is to a large degree based on general as
well as literary history.
The first chapter (Middle Ages) concentrates on the
leading position of the Church and on the Hussite revo¬
lution which led to
a desintegration
of the book culture.
The second chapter spans the end of the 15th century to
the end of the 18th century and elaborates on such topics
as the beginnings of print, expansion of the bourgeoisie
class, radical changes after
1620
(Battle of White Moun¬
tain), the Enlighment causing a new relationship to books
and education. The third chapter deals with the National
Revival of the first part of the 19 th century which provides
entirely new impulses for the Czech book and its social

life, thanks in particular to advancing literacy and Czech
cultural achievements. The fourth chapter deals with the
period from the 1850s to
1918
which is marked by a huge
modernization, both technological and mercantile, as
well as attemps
ta
emancipate the Czech book market
from German influences. The fifth chapter focuses on the
period of the so called First Republic (Czechoslovakia
—
1918—1938):
an increase of the readership and book cultu¬
re, new publishing houses, the economic crisis of the early
1930s which was seen as a destruction of the whole Czech
book culture. The sixth chapter is devoted to the period
of
1939—1945,
i. e. to a time when the Czech Lands were
occupied by the German Third Reich and the amount of
books published was drastically reduced. The next chapter
(seventh) has to do with the era of socialism
(1945—1989)
the main traits of which were a whole nationalization of
the book market, institutional constraints, a well thought
out censorship and
—
as a consequence
-
a significant part
of books published in exile or by means of unofficial ways
(samizdat).
The last chapter focuses on the period after
1989:
huge changes both in publishing structure and in
distribution, the digital revolution, the book explosion
(partly as a result of the so called wild capitalism), harsh
combat between cold rules of economic liberalism and
enthusiasm of those who are convinced that a book is far
from only being a common business commodity.
What is apparent during the whole history is the fact
that the Czech book has existed only a.s an organic part
of the huge Central
Europen
book market network. In
particular, German publishers and book market centres
have played a crucial role. Another remarkable feature is
that no simple and linear development is evident in the
Czech book market. On the contrary, we have to do with
a history full of increases and decreases, advancements

and falls, grand plans and disappoitments. Therefore, we
have to deal with a history of continuous ruptures and
new beginnings.
