SUMMARIES IN QUEST OF THE NEAR EAST S. N. Davidoglu Heavenly Temple in Jewish Apocalyptic Literature in 3d cent. BC - 2nd cent. AD The article reviews the ways ofexpressing the idea of the heavenly temple in Jewish apoca lypses, and how these texts express theological and cultural ideas through the image of heavenly temple. The First Enoch, the Testament of Levi, the Second Enoch, the Apoca lypse ofAbraham, the Fourth Ezra, the Second Baruch, the Third Baruch, and the Songs of the Sabbath Sacrifice have been analyzed. Keywords: Heavenly temple; apocalypse; Jewish apocalyptic; destruction of the Temple; heavenly liturgy; heavenly high priest. S. A. Frantsouzoff The Newest Epigraphic Evidence of the Jews in pre-Islamic Yemen The article presents the results of an examination of a late Sabaic fragmentary inscription found by the Dutch journalist and researcher Sarah Rijziger in 2017 in Na‘d — a village in the Highlands ofYemen to the south-east of Sanaa. This inscription was published in 2018. The names of its authors and the mention of God of Israel indicate that it must have been compiled by members of a local Jewish community. The editors of the inscription did not pay due attention to the first occurrence of the anthroponym ‘bd’l-n, which represents the full equivalent of the most common Islamic name ‘Abdallah, and also overlooked the fact that the inscription is most likely to be dated from the late sixties of the 5,b century AD. The attempt to deny the complete identity of two expressions attested in late Sabaic inscrip tions, viz. “God of Israel” and “Lord of the
Jews”, and to consider them as a sort of bitheism does not stand up to scrutiny. Keywords: ancient Yemen; Judaism in South Arabia; late Sabaic epigraphy; Himyarite kingdom; Highlands ofYemen. M. S. Shapovalov The Siberian Jews on their way to the Holy Land, end of the 19th- beginning of the 20th century The paper based on the materials from the Siberian archives relates a story about the or ganization of a journey to the Holy Land for a Tomsk Jew. At present, our knowledge about numbers and specifics of the Siberian emigration to Palestine is far from being com plete. Most of the materials stored in the collections of the regional Siberian archives, e.g. concerning passport issue, remain classified and hence unavailable. At the same time, the preliminary data do not allow to draw the conclusion that the contacts of the Siberians with the Holy Land were in some way limited. We can definitely say that by the end of the 19th century Siberia and Palestine were connected by a kind of communication bridge, an important part of which were not only Orthodox pilgrims, but the Siberian Jews as well. Keywords: Palestine; pilgrimage; Siberia; Siberian Jews; Judaism; Jewish-Christian relations.
367 SUMMARIES E. Belkina The collection of Judeo-Persian manuscripts in the National Library of Russia and the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, St. Petersburg Over the past 150 years, two collections of Judeo-Persian manuscripts have appeared in St. Petersburg. Today, they are located in the Manuscript Department of the National Li brary of Russia (18 manuscripts) and in the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences (56 manuscripts). They came to the NLR together with Firkovich’s large collections, and only a few books were added later and separately. In the IOM RAS (Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, Russian Academy of Sciences), the parallel collection was formed in “streams”, by several manuscripts or even by a few dozen books. Until today, some manuscripts have attracted the researchers’ attention while the rest remain unexplored and are still waiting in the wings. Our list was made according to the language criterion: texts contained in the manuscripts must have - at least partially - been written in Judeo-Persian. Geographically the area for creating manuscripts was limited to the ter ritories of Greater Iran. Keywords: Jews; Iran; Persian; Judeo-Persian; NLR; Institute of Oriental Manuscripts. V. Mesamed Does theinterfaith harmony really exist in Iran: the largest Jewish community of the Near East in the conditions of an Islamic regime This article explains the current situation of the Jewish community in Iran, in the light of the threats it is now facing. This is an attempt to analyze the socio-political background of its existence as
one of the three non-Muslim confessions allowed by the current Iranian Constitution. Keywords: Iran; Jewish community; conformism; Islamic regime; interfaith harmony. JEWISH COMMUNITIES, EXISTING AND NON-EXISTANT E. V. Gusarova Positive and Negative Discrimination among the Ethiopian Beta Esra’el: Between Origin Myths and History Ethiopia is one of the most ethnically diverse countries of the African continent. The over whelming majority of its peoples have no literary tradition of their own. As a result, their traditions, manners and customs can be subject offield research with only few exceptions. In this connection the Amhara and the Togräy ethnic groups, who constitute the ruling class of the Christian state of Ethiopia, and two other peoples, viz. the Oromo and the Beta Esra’el (the so-called ‘Ethiopian Jews’), are of particular interest, since all of them are more or less well represented in traditional Ethiopian historiography and have conserved their proper memory of generations. Their self-consciousness revealed through the lens of written and oral tradition exerts its influence on patterns of their behavior in the changing world. In spite of their incorporation in modern society, archaic backgrounds of their exist ence, especially their origin myths, are often left on the surface in different ways. One ofthe most complex positions in the Ethiopian state has been occupied by the Beta Esra’el, who claim to be of Israel origin, completely ignoring their local African roots. Keywords: Ethiopia; north-eastern Africa; Ethiopian Jews; falasha; the House of Israel; the
history of Ethiopia.
SUMMARIES 368 R. Marcinkowski Jews in Eastern Galicia in the Light of the Memoirs of Dov Ber of Bolechov Dov Ber of Bolechov ( 1723-1805), a Jewish wine merchant and polyglot, who was known for his disputes with the Frankists in Lvov in 1759, left behind two main works in the fonn of manuscripts: mnbma nn n mmm (The Memoirs ofDov Ber ofBolechov) and õrn nm {Understanding Words), in which he describes his own history and the history ofhis family, but also the history of the Jews in Eastern Galicia. His description as an outside observer seems to be credible. When we read his memoirs, which were written down at the end of his life, we can see a man who did not belong to the elite but who tried to keep up with it. That is why he often overemphasized the merits of his family. However, one cannot underestimate the historical value of his narrative. The history of his family clearly points to social advancement and wealth of the people coming from outside the traditional kahal elite. The paper presents the life of the Jews in Eastern Galicia in the 18th century as described in the Memoirs of Dov Ber of Bolechov. Keywords: Dov of Bolechov; Jews in Eastern Galicia; memoirs. A. A. Kruzhalina Jewish emigration from Russia in the 1880s - 1890s. Based on the “Report of a trip abroad taken in view of the Jewish emigration settlement” by V. L. Berman The article discusses the features of the Russian-Jewish emigration, which was growing in the aftermath of the pogroms in the 1880s and 1890s. On the basis of archival materials, the author characterizes the directions, volumes and specifics
of the Russian-Jewish emi gration of the period, as well as describes the activities of European Jewish societies that assisted Jewish immigrants from Russia. Keywords: Jews; emigration; Russian Empire; 19th century; Jewish question; emigrant societies. I. N. Litvinova Jewish Entrepreneurs of Tsaritsyn at the turn of 19-20 centuries The article gives an idea of the directions and spheres of activity of the business national elite, representing the Jewish society of Tsaritsyn (now Volgograd). The quantitative com position of Jews in the local Guild merchants and among persons who had private hospi tals, phannacy stores is analyzed. The work also provides information about the owners of the trading houses and the Agent-Commission firms. Conclusion: the potential for rapid commercial and industrial growth of the city after its inclusion in the all-Russian railway system owes much to the economically enterprising persons who came to live from the towns of the Jewish pale of settlement. Keywords: business people; entrepreneurs; Jews; trade; sawmills; merchants; doctors; pharmacies; Jewish society. B. N. Kazachenko Prayer House (Kaal) of the Krymchaks This article describes the temple architecture of the Krymchaks. The study encompasses the décor and the architectural style of the Krymchaks ’ cult buildings in Simferopol. The author then analyses the traditional symbols of Judaism, which express divine ideas in the structure
369 SUMMARIES and decoration of the prayer house. The study points out that the elements of architectural décor found in the kaal (abstract geometrical figures) are a reliable ethnic identifier. Karpekin The history of the Jewish religious communities of Beshenkovichy district according to the documents from the State archive of Vitebsk region, 1918-1930 The history of the Jewish religious communities, which existed from 1918 to 1930in what is today Beshenkovichy district, was reflected in a number of documents, which have been stored in the State archive of Vitebsk region: in protocols, plans, reports, correspondence, various lists, claims of lien, notices of assessment and registration books. The most sub stantial are the community records and lists of places of worship, which contain property registers and the information about persons who performed cubic actions there. These sources mention 7 out of 9 settlements. Other types of documents contain indications of one or two places only. Polonskaya Mikitka: Interpretation of a Song (or a Niggun) In the song, a Jew addresses a Mikitka and tells him that he will die and go to hell, because he hasn’t behaved like a pious Jew and won’t be able to tell his Jewish name to the Angel of Death. What is the message of the song: make tun of gentiles, convert them to Judaism, or is Mikitka an assimilated Jew? Perhaps, the more pious a Jew is, the more humble he must be and the more “Mikitka-like” should he regard himself? In the last case Mikitka is a niggun and not just a folk song. Keywords: Mikitka; Hasidism; Yiddish folksong; niggun; macaronic songs; Y. L. Peretz; Jews and gentiles; heaven and hell.
SUMMARIES 370 E. Khazdan Khad Gadya: The Riddle-Song and Its Exploration Khad Gadya is the song that concludes the Passover seder. The researchers have no clear vision both of the time of its appearance and of its genesis. It is called a lullaby, a nurseryrhyme, a domestic table-song. Turgenev and the Russian-Jewish periodicals of the second half of the 19 beginning of the 20 centuries The article discusses the publications in the Russian-Jewish periodicals about Turgenev’s attitude towards the anti-Jewish pogroms in Southern Russia in 1881-2. The publications relate to Turgenev’s correspondence with journalist I. Sorkin, sculptor Antokolsky and writer G. Bogrov, who appealed to Turgenev asking him to speak in defense of the Jews. The article turns to the publications about Turgenev’s assistance to a member of the orga nization Narodnaja Volja A. Pavlovsky, the writer B. Auerbach. The letters of Turgenev and the memories by M. Antokolsky, N. Ostrovskaya, I. Pavlovsky, A. Lukanina attest to Turgenev’s benevolent attitude and sympathy with the Jews and their problems. How ever, Turgenev did not speak openly in defense of the Jews. Turgenev was a model for the Russan-Jewish writers and was popular with the Jewish youth. Keywords: Russian-Jewish periodicals; Jewish question in Russia in the
1880s; pogroms in Russia in 1881-2; correspondence; the memories of Turgenev; protest of 1858; Turgenev’s assistance. G. Boeva The Jewish Question in Russia at the Beginning of the 20th Century: Seven Episodes in Life of Leonid Andreev The article follows the dynamics of Leonid Andreev’s attitude toward the Jewish Question. The writer’s involvement with this problem is analyzed in the light of the transformation of his personality, due to the changes in the social climate in Russia during the first two decades ofthe 20lh century—from the «Chirikov Incident» (1909) to the number ofactions directed against anti-Semitism during WWI. Keywords: The Jewish Question; Leonid Andreev’s work; anti-Semitism; the early 20th century. Yu. A. Volokhova “The Old Schoolmaster” — a forgotten piece by V. Grossman This is the first time a researcher reconstructs the whole history of creation and oblivion of the piece «The Old Schoolmaster», written by V. Grossman in 1946, based on the story of the same name. This work was ordered by the Moscow State Jewish theatre. The major objectives of the research are: 1) to reconstruct the history of the creation and approval of
371 SUMMARIES the play; 2) to find out the reasons why the play had not been neither published nor staged; 3) to determine the place and role of this piece in the literary heritage of the author. The main sources for the research are the documents in the Russian State Archive of Litera ture and Arts, which have never been the area of interest of Grossman’s biographers and researchers. Mikhoels; censorship; General Directorate for Spectacle and Repertoire Control; fascism; Jews; anti-Semitism. V. V. Kirichenko Jewish theme in Georges Perec’s novel “W, ou le Souvenir d’enfance” This paper presents an analysis of the Jewish theme in the novel “W, ou le Souvenir d’enfance” by the French writer Georges Perec. The aim of this work was to determine how the Jewish theme was realized in the novel. One of the central themes of Perec’s works is the search of his own self and the recalling through the writing, which introduces the theme of Jewry. Perec constantly refers to the language to establish his own identity, he is looking for values indicating his fate. In “W, ou le Souvenir d’enfance” he notes that his last name can be translated as “hole”. This symbolic «hole» expresses the author’s literary approach. In this context, the notion of the “aesthetics of absence” is bom. The motives of the loss and the unknown, which correlate with the imperfect acquaintance of the author with the Jewish culture, which is a part of himself, are especially relevant for this “aesthet ics”. The
author of the article comes to the conclusion that for Perec Jewry turns out to be an important theme in the autofictional novel “W, ou le Souvenir d’enfance”, and this theme is associated not only with the author ’s biographical past and present, but also with the peculiarities of his poetics, in particular, with language play. Keywords: Georges Perec; identification; memory; aesthetics of absence; autobiography; Jewish theme, formal constraint. JEWS AND EDUCATION A. A. Zhuravlyov Children of Jewish merchants at the Petrovsky School of Commerce at the turn of the 20lh century The author addresses the issues of admission of the children of Jewish merchants to the St. Petersburg Petrovsky School of Commerce at the end of the nineteenth and the begin ning of the twentieth century. The increase in numbers of the Jewish guild merchants in the capital forced the Merchant Board to decide on the number of Jewish students in the school. The schooling for adherents of all denominations was the same, with the excep tion of Divine law. The Merchant Board sought to make the students’ parents pay for the religious education. Keywords: guild merchants; Jewish merchants; teaching of religion; Petersburg Petrovsky School of Commerce.
SUMMARIES 372 E. G. Pevzner Vocational education in the schools of the Society forthe Spread ofEnlightenment among the Jews of Russia (OPE) in St. Petersburg and Riga The Society for the Spread of Enlightenment among the Jews of Russia (OPE) supported the higher and primary education and made a significant contribution to teaching trades to teenagers at its own schools. The elementary schools of the OPE had their own male and female Crafts Departments, which were designed, mainly, for the students who gradu ated from these schools. The female Department opened in 1895, the male Department in 1897. The schools acquired good equipment and experienced managers were hired. The Crafts Departments provided a good training. All graduating students obtained certificates of qualification, which enabled them to get jobs that required their skills. However, only a few of the students who graduated from the St. Petersburg elementary schools of the OPE wanted to enroll in the crafts courses. The Board of Trastees decided to close these Departments. Unlike St. Petersburg, in Riga the OPE had its own male vocational school. Almost all students who graduated from this school would become specialists, yet their total number was insignificant. Thus, the trade Departments in St. Petersburg and the vocational school in Riga remained unpopular despite the high quality of education which they offered. Keywords: Crafts; workshops; program works; orders; special subjects; profession. B. B. Doubentsov Z. G. Greenberg and Petrograd teachers: words and actions. 1918-1919 This article studies the
activity ofZakhar Grigorievich Greenberg in the sphere ofways and means. Z. G, Greenberg who was Deputy Commissar for Public Education, had in fact the governance of the education institutes in Petrograd in 1918-1919. The article is based in most part on the unpublished sources, which have been found in Petersburg archives. It has been established that Z. G. Greenberg had a profuse correspondence with Petrograd finan cial institutes; he provided semi-annual estimates for his Commissariat and made requests for cash resources. He aimed to secure the regular payment of salary to the teachers and to increase its size. However, the disorder in the Soviet budget and financial system negated the efforts ofZ. G. Greenberg. He was forced to beg for money from other institutions. The author argues that the actions taken by the Deputy Commissar for Education point out that he was determined to prevent the deterioration of the already difficult financial situation of teachers, which was in fine with the policy formulated and pursued by A. V. Lunacharsky. The policy required the evident enemies of the Soviet State to be removed from their teach ing posts and the new teachers to be prepared, at the same time making it possible for the majority of teachers to close ranks with the Soviet State. However, in Petrograd this policy was subject to defamation from the far left groups. In compliance with the far left rhetoric that set the tone in district party organizations, Z. G. Greenberg, verbally and in spite of his own actions, expressed his willingness not to provide for the majority of
teachers. Still, the attempted compromise with the far left did not help the adherents ofA. V. Lunacharsky to retain the governance of the public education in Petrograd. Keywords: Public education; Commissariat for Education of the North Region Union of Communes; education policy; teachers of secondary schools; salary for teachers; financing; institutional estimates; financial resources; Petrograd City Department for Public Education.

The article gives an account of the active role Sternberg played in the activities of Jewish societies in Russia. The authors point out his significance and the great prestige he enjoyed among the Russian Jews. For the first time, several letters have been cited that were sent by Üte Jewish organizations of Russia, who elected Stern berg their member. Besides, a little-known article “The Problem of the Jewish Ethnogra phy” will be discussed with constant reference to excerpts from it. It has become clear that long before the onset ofglobalization processes, L. Ya. Sternberg warned that the everyday life of the Jewish townships was in danger of disappearing, which called for an immediate and thorough study of its features. Keywords: ethnography; Jews; Sternberg; Jews in Russia. O. B. Vakhromeeva Scientific, pedagogical and practical activities ofA. L. Krapivin “Having read the memorandum of Comrade Brenner on the Zionist case, I allow myself to make a few comments”: Commissar for Foreign Affairs of the RSFSR G. V. Chicherin, on the negative consequences which the repressive measures against the Zionists had for the international prestige of the Soviet state, June 28,1920 The article looks at some aspects ofthe so-called Zionist Case, which began when the dele gates and guests of the All-Russian Zionist Congress were arrested in Moscow on April 23, 1920. Following this, during the searches conducted by the Secret Department of the AllRussian Emergency Commission on the premises of the Central Committee of the Russian Zionist Organization (RZO), in the apartments of the members of the Central Committee as well as the Congress delegates, documents testifying to the disloyal attitude of the Zionists towards the Soviet authorities had been found. This resulted in a criminal investigation into the Zionist leaders’ activities. On May 6,1920, the Politburo of the Central Committee of the RCP(b) declared the need of bringing the policy concerning the Jewish question in line with the state policy. In fact, this meant that the tactics of a special, more or less tolerant at titude towards Zionism, as a specific form of the Jewish national movement, had exhausted itself and had to yield to the more stringent methods of repression, usually practiced in dealing with counter-revolutionary organizations. At the same time, in the course of the investigation into the criminal case, a serious discrepancy emerged between the positions of
the Central Bureau of Jewish Communist Sections under the Central Committee of the RCP(b), the Cheka and the People’s Commissariat for Foreign Affairs regarding the future fate of the right-wing Zionism in Soviet Russia. The article contains a fiili text of the letter by G. V. Chicherin to the Presidium ofthe Cheka filed on June 28,1920, which outlined the

378 SUMMARIES IN THE EYES OF THE WORLD M. M. Yunusov An account by Montaigne about one Jewish rite (from the “Journal du voyage en Italie”) In 1580-81 Montaigne undertook an extensive trip through Switzerland, Germany and Italy. During this time, he kept a journal, written partly by Montaigne himself and partly by his secretary. This Journal du voyage was most likely not intended for publication, yet it provides the reader with a practical account of Montaigne’s perception of some questions considered in the Essais. One of these questions is Montaigne’s detailed description of a Jewish religious male circumcision ceremony in Rome. Keywords: Montaigne; Rome; Juifs; circoncision. N. Nikolayev, R. Ibragimov “The Jewish Question” in the liberal periodicals at the end of the 19th century: based on the materials from Vestnik Evropy (“Herald of Europe”) and Russkaya Mysl (“Russian thought”) The article analyzes the “Jewish question” journalism of the liberal magazines Vesinik Evropy (“Herald of Europe”) and Russkaya Mysl (“Russian thought”). The authors trace the evolution in the views of writers in the 1880s-l 890s, show the difference in approaches of the two magazines in separate aspects of the “Jewish question” (in opinions about po groms, anti-Jewish legislation, “the Dreyfus affair”). Keywords: journalism; magazine; the “Jewish question”; the pogroms; the Dreyfus Affair. V. A. Gerasimova Anti-Semitism in Siberian Eparchial Bulletins during the World War I The article deals with the representation of Jewish-related topics in the Orthodox eparchial periodicals of Siberian
provinces (Tobolsk, Omsk, Tomsk and Irkutsk) during the First World War. This period was marked by the general growth the in anti-Semitic sentiments in Siberian society, which resulted in the 1916 Jewish pogrom in Krasnoyarsk. The author considers the official Orthodox press as one of the sources for the shaping ofpublic opinion about Jews in Siberia. The article discusses the intensification of anti-Jewish rhetoric in the Siberian eparchial bulletins in 1916-1917, which, according to the author, was due to the fact that a part of the Orthodox clergy had become involved in the Black Hundred move ment in the region and used the Jewish topic in their fight for the influence on the Russian press market. Keywords: Anti-Semitism; Siberia; eparchial bulletin; Jews in Siberia; periodicals; interethnic relations; interreligious relations. T. Kuznecova The Jews in the Latvian Perception: Quotations in the Latvian Anti-Semitic Literature in the 1920s The aim of this paper is to determine the way of quoting the Old Testament that prevailed among the Latvian authors of anti-Semitic texts and to reveal the mode of their perception
379 SUMMARIES of the past, as well as to highlight some features that defined their thinking and the model of the world attitude that was instilled by them. The means of quoting the Scripture testifies that the past was not comprehended as entire and qualitatively definite. In particular, the thought of those authors unfolds in a dichoto my: there is on the one hand, a highly cultured “we” and on the other hand, an anti-cultural enemy — the Jew. This idea demands from individuals and social groups a rigid stance towards the Jew: from restrictions in the economic sphere to the expulsion from the state. Keywords: Latvians; Jews; perception; quotation; anti-Semitic texts. T. K. Nikolskaya Jews in the memoirs of Russian Protestants In the memoirs of the Russian Protestants, a special attention has often been given to the Jews. Among the authors of the reviewed memoirs, there are five Evangelical Christian Baptists, three Pentecostals and one Evangelical Christian in the Spirit of the Apostles. According to the type of relations with the authors, the Jews mentioned in the memoirs are classified into three categories: 1) the co-religionist Jews; 2) the Jews-participants in the struggle against religion (government officials, bosses at work); 3) neutral environment (neighbors, юсаі residents). These memoirs are of interest for the study ofhistory, daily life and the spiritual quest of Soviet Jews, as well as of the inter-ethnic relations in the USSR.
